The students have completed working with their images using technology. They used Photoshop or Google Draw. Some students drew their own images; some used their own photos and changed them; and some adapted photos they found (for this last one we discussed how important it is not to take or copy other’s work, but to be inspired by it to create new work).
The students print out their images at a reduced size to fit their Scrabble Tiles’ scale. They consider how many times they will use the image in the piece, perhaps creating a rhythm or an emphasis point. Or, they can use multiple images—maybe a different one for each tile. We discuss how important the use of diversity and similarity is when designing a cohesive whole. Some students even use painting techniques to create unique images on their tiles and use color as the cohesive design element.
It is really fun to watch them work out the designs with beads and images. I believe the students are thoughtfully considering how the Design Elements and Principles will help them create the best piece for themselves and The Shop. They also are doing a fine job on visually interpreting their identity through this first project.
