Today’s class was filled with lots of information on identity and branding. What is identity design? What is a brand? How are the Design Elements and Principles utilized to visually describe a brand? These questions and more were asked, discussed and answered during our lecture. Visuals were used including many from the book Designing Brand Identity, 4th edition by Wheeler. This book is a great resource for more in-depth knowledge on identity and branding. I use it in my college courses.
Further investigation into all the elements of a brand was shown by visiting this website outlining McDonald’s new branding campaign. Using a brand that students can relate to is always a good idea. They responded well and were very engaged in the discussion.
At the high school level, the students were able to grasp the general concepts of what is identity design and its touch points (personal and a commercial company). We also went over how one begins to design it and what elements do they need to compile. We gave them an Identity Handout with a homework assignment. The most important question they need to answer is to “list three characteristics that describe them.” Check out the homework questions for further investigation.
Another resource I shared with them is the Hailpixel website. We discussed what a color palette was and how to design one. This website is a great resource, easy to use, for the students to use on their own.
