Ms. Burns described the process as such:
1. Draw your idea using a pencil. Make sure the shapes that need to be pierced are clear and understandable.
2. Cut our your drawing leaving a bit of space around the drawing.
3. Use the aviation sheers to cut the type of metal you want to use in the shape of a rectangle. You will need two almost exact same size pieces. Make sure your design fits snug on the metal—no waste please! You can even butt up your drawing to the edge of the metal.
4. Hammer your two pieces flat making sure they ‘kiss’ and there is no bending or warping.
5. Super glue your pieces together.
6. Rubber cement your drawing onto the metal.
7. Use the drill placing some holes in your negative space. You will use these holes when sawing.
8. Use a jewelers saw to cut out your negative space.
9. File harsh edges.
10. Remove the two pieces of metal with a torch. Continue to file.
11. Buff if desired.
Ms. Burns is demonstrating the sawing technique below.
