This first project, Scrabble Tile Bracelet, was really interesting in many ways. We had some hiccups with technology, but creatively solved them and moved forward. Overall, the students in the class are “good thinkers” and they synthesized the information we presented to them very well (in reference to the Aesthetics, Identity and Branding, and the Design Elements and Principles lectures). I believe the information was helpful in focusing the students as they developed their basic identity.
The students had to produce two bracelets, one for themselves and one for “The Shop” (we are going to integrate entrepreneurial practices in this class later in the semester). More towards the end of the semester students will be able to sell their wares in the school store and on a website. It was
wonderful to watch them learn how to create their first bracelet and then breeze through their second. Along the way we discussed what types of things would be “marketable” vs. “personal.”
Overall, the quality of their work was remarkable. Their bracelets were striking and many created cohesive designs worth bringing to market. Their concept of identity mixed with color, shapes, textures, rhythm, etc. created happy artists—every student liked what they created (in relation to teenagers that is a good thing). I don’t think I can afford to buy all of them for myself, but I would if I could!!
Enjoy some of the completed bracelets. (Once “The Shop” website is up it will be posted on the blog).
