Lots of work was completed today regarding the structure of the the Scrabble Tile jewelry. Ms. Burns provided two handouts on the project. You can find them both here: Handout1 and Handout2. These two handouts show how to construct tile jewelry, materials, techniques, and helpful tips. The students are working quickly on building a foundation for their designs.
Ms. Burns drills the holes for the students’ tiles. The students complete everything else themselves—sanding the tiles, painting, appliqué of their identity designs, choosing beads, and stringing it all together.
Jasmine, who has done this project before, was extremely helpful in demonstrating how to use a “fork” (made out of wire) to hold a tile and paint it on three sides. She designed this technique herself. The fork wire tips are placed in the holes. This technique is much faster than just painting the tiles while laying on the desk. Using the fork allows the students to turn it and really get into the nooks and crannies. Students need to paint the unfinished wood at least two times—allowing for drying in-between.
I worked with most students on utilizing their identity color palette. We looked at their Pinterest boards and viewed the posts. The posts (or pins) allow us to view many items they collected quickly and discuss what types of colors they are drawn to. After discussion many students had a better understanding on why their color palette identity works to explain them.
